This Australian red cedar Flitch Coffee Table is a
"one off" piece that can be reproduced in any timber.
Flitches vary in sizes and shapes, this one coming from the
buttress of the tree, the knot hole was hollowed out in a
half "avocado shape" to be used as a bowl for fruit or nuts
or displaying natural treasures etc.
The crack in the other end of the flitch was cleverly
stabilised by Michael in two ways:-
(1) A fitted butterfly key to the underside of the top
(2) On the top is a carved set of "T" bootlaces using a
block glued across the crack with the grain travelling at
90degrees across the grain of the flitch for added strength.
The laces were let into the top for an extra dimension.
