Intergrain Timber Finishes Pty. Ltd.

PHILOSOPHY:

A commitment to the development testing and manufacture of a range of technically innovative timber finishes of the highest quality, incorporating the most recent developments in raw material technology, formulated specifically for Australia's unique climatic conditions.

HISTORY:

Research and development of Intergrain UVC, DWD and Ultraclear commenced in 1983. Released in August 1986 UVC and DWD were unique in being the first exterior clear timber finishes on the Australian market based on a new photo-crosslinking polymer with inherent resistance to ultra violet radiation induced photo degradation. The release in September 1983 of Floortec (formerly Hydrotec) water based polyurethane heralded a new era in water based timber coating technology.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT:

The development and testing of Intergrain Timber Finishes is carried out with the aid of an accelerated weathering machine. Test panels are subjected to continuous ultra violet radiation, moisture, heat and humidity. The results of these tests are then compared with known controls and correlated with standard exterior exposure test panels angled at 45 degress facing north. Great care is taken in the selection and evaluation of raw materials to ensure optimum performance. Ultra violet absorbers are tested using both accelerated weathering and outdoor exposure methods. Humidity chamber tests are used to evaluate the effectiveness of in film fungicides and to establish the correct balance of high activity with low toxicity. Fungicides have an important function to perform in preventing mould, mildew and fungal defacement of the coating and must maintain their effectiveness from tropical Queensland to Southern Tasmania.

Fundamental of Timber Protection:

In order to fully protect the timber substrate an exterior clear film forming timber finish must be able to perform the following functions:
  1. Maintain film flexibility for the life of the coating to resist grain cracking and aid adhesion.
  2. Resist photo degradation from ultra violet light.
  3. Allow moisture vapour transmission (microporous) to prevent blistering from entrapped moisture.
  4. Impart water repellency to maintain less than 20% moisture content in order to prevent fungal attack causing dry rot.
  5. Resist fungal attack in the form of unsightly and damaging organic growth, mould and mildew.
  6. Weather by gradual surface erosion to facilitate ease of recoating.

Intergrain UVC and DWD are formulated to perform these functions when applied according to instructions.
