TIMBER PRESERVATIVE
PREVENTS AND CONTROLS ROT AND TERMITES IN SOUND AND DECAYED TIMBER
BLUE 7 is a water-based, diffusible wood preservative originally developed
by the CSIRO (Australian Patent No.491638) to preserve and provide long-
term protection to sound timber and protect rotting structural timber from
further decay, where the remaining structural integrity justifies treatment.
BLUE 7 has proved effective in preventing wood decay and termite attack in
excess of 20 years. BLUE 7 also imparts flame-retardant properties to treated
wood.
ACTIVE CONSTITUENTS:
201 g/L Fluorine (F). 160.3 g/L Copper (Cu) 105.5 g/L Boron (B)
TYPICAL PROPERTIES:
Appearance: Intense Blue. Solids (NVM): 55.5 +/- 1.0%
Active Content: 88.0 +/- 2.0% S.G. 1.56 @ 20deg C. pH 9.0 +/- 0.5% @ 20deg.C.
COMPOSITION:
A highly complexed aqueous dispersion of Copper, Fluorine and Boron -
present as a Cupro-Ammonium Fluoroborate Complex.
PRESERVATIVE ACTION:
BLUE 7 treats damp wood by diffusional penetration. The copper component
moves slowly into the surface layers and fixes while the boron and fluorine pentrate deeply
into the moist timber. If the moist conditions that lead to decay and hence to diffusion of
BLUE 7 dry out then decay stops and the BLUE 7 becomes dormant.
If the area becomes wet again then the BLUE 7 resumes diffusion and decay inhibition.
On drying the blue colour changes to light green.
WHERE TO USE:
Windows, weatherboards, fascias, garden furniture, pergolas, joists, bearers, studs, rafters,
stumps, decking, power poles, boats, bridges, fences etc., or wherever the remaining structural
integrity of the timber justifies treatment rather than replacement.
APPLICATION:
1. Exterior exposed surfaces - pergolas, fascias, weatherboards,
windowsills etc.
-
Scrape away paint and decayed wood to leave a clean, rough surface.
-
Hose or wash out cavity with water and while still damp apply by brush 3-4
wet on wet saturating
applications of BLUE 7. For thin section timbers such as
weatherboards one application of BLUE 7 is sufficient.
NB: In order to ensure successful diffusion of the BLUE 7
into the timber it is important that the treated area remains damp with
BLUE 7 between applications.
-
Before filling cavity and repainting remove excess BLUE 7 from wood
surface by scrubbing with a wet brush and water. When thoroughly dry fill
with treated pine block or Intergrain
Woodblend wood filler and repaint.
IMPORTANT:Wherever possible BLUE 7 must be overpainted in
exposed exterior locations to avoid excessive leaching and to provide long
term protection. Where painting is not possible or practical, retreatment
with BLUE 7 will be required at five- yearly intervals.
2. Accessible unexposed timber:
Studs, joists, bearers, flooring, roof battens. Where access is possible
proceed as for application one and apply three saturating coats of BLUE 7
to affected surface.
Inaccessible unexposed timber: eg. bearers, joists.
Application by brush or spray. If affected face is inaccessible apply one
application to accessible surfaces in area of decay. Preparation of BLUE
7 spraying solution for areas difficult to access. Prepare in a plastic
container the following solution: 50 parts BLUE 7 , 20 parts
household ammonia, 30 parts water. Stir thoroughly and apply by plastic
garden-type spray wearing appropriate mask, goggles,
gloves and protective clothing.
4. Timbers in direct contact with wet ground: stumps, fence posts,
poles. Preferred System:
Remove soil from base of stump or pole
for 150 mm below ground level. Surround stump with plastic bag and firmly
seal to base of stump with tape. Encapsulate stump to 300 mm above ground
level to form water-tight bag. Fill with BLUE 7 and seal top of bag
to stump with tape to retain a reservoir of BLUE 7. This system will
prevent further deterioration for at least 5 years, at which time the
treatment should be repeated. Major decay affecting in-ground timbers
ccurs between 600 mm in ground to 150 mm above ground. Soil below 600 mm
is anaerobic and does not support decay fungi.
Alternative Method for treating house stumps, fence posts, etc.
Drill 12 mm hole at 45 degree angle to terminate slightly below ground level.
Depth of hole should be approximately one third the width of the stump,
ie.for 100 mm stump, hole depth should be approximately 30 mm. Avoid
drilling directly into heartwood. Fill hole with BLUE 7 and plug
with dowel. To treat larger house, power poles, and bridge pylons less
than 94 cm circumference, drill three non intersection 16 mm holes 450 mm
long at an angle of 70 degrees to horizontal commencing 10 cm above the
ground directed 5 cm off the pole centre.
Repeat for poles greater than 94 cm but drill four 16 mm holes 500 mm deep/
long. Fill holes with BLUE 7 and plug.
Care should be taken when using this method not to weaken the structural
integrity of the timber.
QUANTITIES REQUIRED:
To ensure adequate protection from decay, timber must have a minimum
loading of 5.5 litres of BLUE 7 per cubic metre (m3).
When applied at this loading one litre of BLUE 7 will provide
adequate protection to 13.9 square metres (m2) or 71 lineal metres of
typical weatherboards/cladding. To calculate the quantity of BLUE 7
required to treat solid timber sections multiply the width x depth x
length in centimetres and divide the answer by 182 to get the number of
millilitres or litres required, eg. A typical windowsill 1 metre long x 110
mm deep x 40 mm high = 4400 cm3 divided by 182 = 24 mls of
BLUE 7.
Decay pockets in larger section timbers may require 2-3 wet-on-wet
applications to achieve the correct loading and ensure adequate diffusion
to protect sound timber adjoining rot affected areas.
POINTS OF INTEREST
BLUE 7 will not increase the strength of structurally unsound
timber.
- BLUE 7 is not a termiticide, ie: the poison is not carried back
to destroy the nest. However BLUE 7 applied or injected into
termite infected timber will destroy termites and termites will avoid
BLUE 7-treated timber.
- Laboratory trials of BLUE 7-treated radiata pine have remained
decay free for over 20 year. Many structural timbers treated with BLUE 7
have remained decay free for over 12 years.
- BLUE 7 acts as a flame retardant on treated timber.
WARNING:
Avoid BLUE 7 contact with zinc, galvanised iron or aluminium. Use
only copper, plastic or bitumen coated galvanised iron for fixings or
flashing.
CLEAN UP:
Brushes and utensils can be cleaned with water in a plastic container.
Spots of BLUE 7 on clothing can be removed by daubing
with household ammonia and water.
DISPOSAL TREATMENT OF UNUSED OR SPILT BLUE 7:
Do not empty into drain, sink or sewer or allow to contaminate rivers,
creeks, waterways or lakes.
Apply unused BLUE 7 to fence posts, rails, palings, house stumps etc.
Soak up spilt BLUE 7 with garden soil, sand, sawdust or similar
absorbent material and dispose with household waste or in a normal land-fill
tip.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:
Keep out of reach of children. Do not swallow. Read Safety instructions
before opening or using. Always wear rubber gloves and safety glasses to
prevent contact with skin and eyes. Avoid breathing vapours.
Use an appropriate face mask if spraying. If accidental
skin contact occurs wash thoroughly with soap and water.
FIRST AID:
If poisoning occurs contact a Doctor or Poisons Information Centre.
If swallowed do not induce vomiting: give a glass of water. If skin
contact occurs remove contaminated clothing and wash skin thoroughly.
If in eyes, hold eyes open, flood with water for at least 15 minutes and
see a doctor.
