John Nelson carves a range of creepy endangered wildlife. This endangered ant (Ant Nothomyrmecia Macrops) is the world's most archaic living ant and was known previously only from two damaged specimens found in 1930 in Western Aust. The species was recently discovered on the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. John adds the following

".... my little sculpture was carved from a single piece of red gum recycled from a fence post cut perhaps 80 years ago. I chose this material for its beautiful warm colour and also for its symbolic value; that is, a tree once more common in the South Australian landscape than it is today."

However John says that red-gum is by no means the easiest timber to work in miniature!
